Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer announces successful rollout of National Voter Registration Act Initiative

Submitted to the Tribune

MINDEN, Nev. – Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer Amy Burgans is pleased to announce the successful rollout of the 2024 National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) initiative, a critical project aimed at maintaining accurate and up-to-date voter rolls in Douglas County. This process, which began with the distribution of 3,434 Confirmation Cards, ensures that voter information is current and accurate as we approach the upcoming election.

In compliance with federal and state laws, the Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer’s office sent out forwardable Confirmation Cards on July 2, 2024, to voters who had received undeliverable election mail, including mail ballots, sample ballots, and voter identification cards. The cards requested that recipients update their voter registration information, notify the office if they had moved, or confirm that their current information was accurate.

“Our commitment to ensuring that Douglas County’s voter rolls are accurate and up-to-date is paramount,” Burgans said. “This process is essential for maintaining the integrity of our elections and ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in our democracy.”

The key outcomes of this year’s NVRA process include:

  • 3,434 Confirmation Cards Sent: These cards were sent to voters whose election mail had been returned as undeliverable, prompting them to update their voter information.
  • 217 Voters Removed: These individuals informed the Clerk-Treasurer’s office that they had moved, resulting in their removal from the voter rolls.
  • 590 Voters Confirmed or Updated Their Information: These voters responded to the Confirmation Cards by verifying or updating their voter registration details.
  • 2,627 Voters Inactivated: Voters who did not respond to the Confirmation Cards were marked as inactive, per NVRA guidelines.
  • The inactivation of voters is an essential part of keeping voter rolls clean and up to date. Inactive voters remain on the voter list but are required to verify their information before participating in future elections.

The NVRA process was completed in accordance with the timeline mandated by law, with all Confirmation Cards being sent out at least 33 days before the 90-day deadline, which fell on August 6, 2024. This careful adherence to deadlines ensures that Douglas County remains compliant with both federal and state regulations governing voter registration and election integrity.
