Douglas County Commission delay Lake Tahoe Restoration Act
After an hour of deliberation and a split vote, Douglas County Commissioners decided Thursday to delay their stance on Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s Lake Tahoe Restoration Act.
The bill, S1192, is expected to bring $300 million to Lake Tahoe over the next 10 years for environmental improvements, as well as change the U.S. Forest Service’s designation from the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit to the Lake Tahoe National Scenic Forest and Recreation Area.
“One of the most fundamental things we need in Tahoe is financial help. I believe many of us have strong feelings about the environmental improvement program but we can’t survive on wish lists, there needs to be money attached,” Juan Palma, Forest Service supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin, told the commission. “But without a constant push on the bureaucracy in Washington they will not fulfill their obligations toward us.”
The resolution has already received support from many local agencies, including the city of South Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Douglas and South Lake Tahoe chambers of commerce and the League to Save Lake Tahoe. But Douglas County commissioners were of a different mind on the matter – despite stressing their desire to preserve the clarity of Lake Tahoe.
“Unfortunately for Senator Feinstein, her track record on public land speaks for itself,” said Commissioner Steve Weissinger. “You’re asking five guys to support a senator who has misused her position in the senate for many, many years.”
After Commissioner Don Miner declared a motion against supporting the bill – which was subsequently opposed by commissioners Bernie Curtis and Jacques Etchegoyhen – the board decided to delay their decision pending more information from Palma at the July 15 board meeting.
Also at that meeting, Palma said he would brief the commission on the outcome of the Dreyfus property investigation which he said has reached a conclusion.
In further commission business:
n There was a presentation of future projects by the Nevada Department of Transportation, including roadwork, erosion control and drainage work.
n Kahle Park Phase II construction was given to American General for a bid of $2,399,635.
