United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra recently received $486,828 in funding from the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board.

EFSNB is a federal program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency to expand efforts to provide shelter, food and supportive services for hungry, homeless and needy people in the U.S. The award includes reallocation of $72,800 to be distributed throughout Nevada when funding is available.

Four Douglas County organizations received a portion of the money. Douglas County Social Services received $7,500; Carson Valley Food Closet received $10,000; Family Support Council of Douglas County received $11,271 and Our Lady of Tahoe Church received $1,500.

“This supplement to UWNNS is critical during these tough economic times,” said Karen Barsell, chief executive officer and president of UWNNS, stated in a press release. “These funds will help many individuals in our region that are in need of basic assistance.”

A panel of volunteers determines how to distribute the monies throughout northern Nevada to organizations that are serving homeless individuals and families, those at-risk of being homeless, and families who are in need of emergency food and shelter as well as one-time rental and utility assistance.
