Douglas Rotary head attends convention
Wanda Olinger, 2002-2003 president of the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club, attended the Rotary International Convention June 23 through 27 at Barcelona, Spain. She was accompanied by her husband, Bob, who is a past Rotary president with 30 years perfect attendance.
While in Barcelona, the Olingers met with Rotary International President Bhickai Rattakul, who announced that Rotary had eradicated polio in Europe. The goal of the international service organization is to completely eliminate polio throughout the world by 2005. The efforts of Rotary members have already made it possible for 98.5 percent of polio to be eradicated off the face of the Earth.
“The Rotary Club of Tahoe Douglas, and I as president, hope to help in the efforts that Rotary International began. There are 10 countries left in hard-to-reach areas where Rotary is working to eliminate polio. This effort is a world wide project and we are proud to be part of this international project.” Olinger said.
Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club, which was chartered in September 1962, is a service club that helps the community through scholarships and community service projects.
The Olingers, who traveled throughout Europe for a month, returned to Tahoe in time for Wanda to take over as the new president of the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club. She was presented the president’s gavel and bell at the club’s noon meeting June 5 at Harveys Resort and Casino.
