Douglas schools apply for grants

Lauren Halsted, Tahoe Daily Tribune

The Douglas County School District is filing an application for a school renovation and repair grant. The district intends to use the funds to update older facilities so they meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

The grant application is due to the State Department by June 6. If accepted, the district will be awarded between $25,000 to $30,000. Combined with their own money, the grant will allow the district to focus on updating some of its oldest facilities.

Out of the 12 schools in the district, five or six were built since the act was passed and are accessible to disabled persons; the rest of the schools were built between 1920-1990 and do not meet the current standards of the ADA, Rick Kester, director of business services, said.

The schools which need the most attention are Zephyr Cove Elementary School, George Wittell High School, Gardnerville Elementary School and Carson Valley Middle School.

“We’re always looking for funding to update our older schools,” Kester said.

The cost of renovating one restroom to the standards of the ADA is between $5,000-$10,000, Kester said.

The district is seeking input from parents, educators and other interested members of the community on the use of these funds. Contact Brandon Swain with the Douglas County School District at (775) 782-5210.
