Douglas tops 2000 census participation

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. – Douglas County exceeded its 2000 participation results by a percent on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The county is at 69 percent participation so far, making it fourth in the state, tied with Washoe County. Storey County is the top respondent returning 77 percent of its census forms. Neighboring Lyon County is second in the state with 75 percent participation. Churchill County and Carson City are tied at 74 percent.

That some Douglas residents who have post office boxes reported not receiving their forms became national news on April 2 when an R-C news story was reported by Rush Limbaugh.

The deadline to mail a form before the census sends someone out to the house is Friday.

The census has issued a phone number for those who may have been left out. Call (866) 872-6868 to order a form or obtain help filling one out.
