Drink of the Week: Josh Cellars’ Reserve Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon

This week's featured drink is Josh Cellars’ Reserve Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon.

In our Drink of the Week segment, we’ll showcase one unique type of beer, wine, cocktail — you name it — to try at one of the countless breweries, bars and restaurants from around the basin.

With the Mosquito Fire currently showing its impacts on the Tahoe Basin, I thought this week might be a good week to touch on a drink that benefits the firefighters that protect our local communities. That and the fact that the California State Senate recognizes September as Firefighter Appreciation Month, give us every reason to raise a glass to these brave men and women.

Josh Cellars donates one dollar of each bottle of their Lodi Reserve Cab to the National Volunteer Firefighter Council or local firefighter charities nationwide – including the Cal Fire Benevolent Foundation in Sacramento which helps provide California firefighters and their families to help recover from injury or loss of life.

I realize Lodi is a bit out of my normal coverage zone, but all things considered, I think the cause is worthy enough — drink wine, support firefighters. That’s an easy pitch right there.

This 2020 vintage (fourth edition) starts out with aromas of coffee, chocolate, and pepper. The slightly spicy foreshadowing lets you know you’re in for full-body beauty. It backs it up with flavors of blue and blackberry, vanilla, and dare I say, a little bit of fig. The finish is long, dry, and smooth — a perfect punctuation to a bold sip.

The ABV sits at 14.5%, so depending on your familiarity with cabs, could be right in the sweet spot. This wine seemed to be right in my wheelhouse. I’m not sure why red wine tends to get better with each sip, but that was definitely the case here. No, I did not drink the whole bottle myself, but doesn’t mean I didn’t want to. Cheers and stay safe out there.

Josh Cellars ships to both California and Nevada and can be found in local stores in and around the Tahoe Basin. For wine information visit them online at joshcellars.com
