Drowning victim in critical condition

An 8-year-old girl remained in critical condition Tuesday after an apparent drowning in front of the Beacon Restaurant at Camp Richardson.

El Dorado County Sheriff’s investigators said the girl, from Santee, Calif., was face down in the water for about 45 seconds before being pulled out. Vacationing paramedics and an off-duty doctor were the first to treat the little girl, said South Lake Tahoe Fire Battalion Chief Bill Gilliland.

Firefighters who were responding to a brush fire around 3:35 p.m. on Fallen Leaf Lake Road arrived quickly and took over CPR. A firefighter traveled with the girl to Barton Memorial Hospital in the Lake Tahoe Ambulance and continued treatment, Gilliland said.

Sheriff’s investigators said medical personnel at Barton were able to obtain a heartbeat and then the girl was Careflighted to Washoe Medical Center. On Wednesday she was still listed in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The girl was swimming in the roped off area adjacent to the Beacon’s outdoor deck, investigators said.
