Drug dealer sentenced

The Record-Courier

MINDEN – A 23-year-old South Lake Tahoe man who said he only sold drugs for three weeks was sentenced Tuesday to 30 months in Nevada State Prison for possession of a controlled substance for sale.

Douglas County District Judge Dave Gamble suspended the prison term and placed Joshua B. Roy on three years probation.

He ordered Roy to complete an in-patient treatment program. Roy admitted leaving a South Lake Tahoe recovery center after just a few days.

He said he didn’t use drugs and returned after a few hours, but was taken to Douglas County Jail where he has served 84 days since his arrest on Sept. 18.

Lawyer Terri Roeser said her client had undergone a complete transformation.

“He told me he preferred jail to being out on the streets and using drugs,” Roeser said.

She said he plans to leave the Tahoe area and live with his family in Redding.

“The last three or so months have changed my priorities a lot,” he said. “Everything has fallen away. It made me realize how insubstantial and disturbing my life was.”

Gamble said he appreciated Roy’s “good insight,” but the defendant needed to grasp what lay ahead of him. “These things are astoundingly easy to say to me in chains,” Gamble said. “You need to take hold of the fact this is lifelong work.”

He ordered Roy to continue participation in 12-step recovery programs and other counseling. He must abstain from drugs, alcohol and gambling.
