Drugs found in DUI suspect’s car

Gregory Crofton, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Officers confiscated a backpack containing $23,000, an ounce of marijuana and 29 white tablets early Thursday at Rufus Allen Boulevard and Highway 50.

The valuable backpack was discovered in the front seat of a car after California Highway Patrol officers arrested a Sacramento man for a DUI.

Officers stopped a white 1984 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Ivan Slayton because it was weaving and making U-turns around 1:30 a.m. He smelled of alcohol and failed sobriety tests, said Officer Sherry Reehl.

Almost all of the cash in the backpack consisted of $100 bills. The marijuana was packaged for sale, and the mystery tablets were sent to the Department of Justice for testing, Reehl said.

The cash is suspected drug money and was deposited in an asset-forfeiture holding account until a judge determines if it is related to a crime, said Officer Greg Norrgard, of SLEDNET, South Shore’s combined narcotic enforcement team.

Slayton was held at El Dorado County jail, with bail set at $10,768, on Thursday afternoon. He was booked for driving under the influence and possession of drugs for sale. Slayton has two warrants for his arrest out of Sacramento County for petty theft.
