Early voting numbers down in Douglas

MINDEN, Nev. – Early voting numbers are down a sixth compared to the last election.

According to the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office, 341 people turned out to vote on Saturday, the first day of early voting. That’s down 16.6 percent from the 409 voters who turned out in May 2010.

Most people cast ballots at the Douglas County Courthouse, with 76 voting at Kahle Community Center on Saturday.

More than three times as many Republicans, 255-61, cast a ballot on Saturday as Democrats. Only 17 nonpartisan voters cast a ballot Saturday.

So far the clerk’s office has received 509 absentee ballots, again with most coming from Republicans. In all 328 Republicans turned in absentee ballots, compared to 130 Democrats and 51 nonpartisan and minor party voters.

As of Saturday afternoon, 3 percent of Douglas County’s 31,788 voters cast ballots.

Early voting will resume 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Douglas County Courthouse. Polls will also be open 4-6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunridge Fire Station.

This is only the second June primary election in Nevada history. Two years ago, Republicans had a contested race for governor, one to pick the candidate to face Harry Reid, and a primary to find out who would replace James Settelmeyer in the Assembly. This year, the assembly race is back, along with a runoff to pick the two top candidates in county commission district 5.
