Earth Day at college expands

The Environmental Club at the Lake Tahoe Community College has expanded its plans for Earth Day this year and expects a much larger turnout than the inaugural event in 1999.

Scheduled today, LTCC’s event will be held at the college commons and, weather permitting, outside on school grounds. Information booths will be available and local bands are scheduled. And there are supposed to be games and prizes.

Last year’s event was smaller, with a handful of information booths inside the college’s front lobby. However, Environmental Club members said last year they wanted to expand the event.

“Having an Earth Day celebration is important to raise awareness about people’s impact on Earth and what they can do to protect life on Earth,” said Leslie Ames, faculty advisor for the Environmental Club. “We hope a lot of people come.”

Events are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. More information is available by calling Ames at (530) 541-4660, ext. 360.

The club sponsors recycling programs and concerns itself with environmental impacts of future college development.

Earth Day, a nationwide event which began in 1970, is Saturday. The League to Save Lake Tahoe and other groups have organized an event for Saturday at the South Tahoe Middle School. Information about that event is available by calling (530) 541-5388.
