EAT This Week: Sushi Pier’s Special Tahoe Roll

To try and decide each week where and what to eat around the basin can be a challenge – there are so many amazing choices. In this feature we’ll dive into dishes that will surely satisfy those hunger pangs and leave you wondering where to go next.

It’s been a while since I have featured sushi in this column, and as soon as the bite hit my lips, I wondered why I had waited so long. I love sushi. And I’m pretty sure sushi loves me. So being able to feature this match made in heaven as the feature this week, it seems like a natural fit for a Valentine’s Day celebration (or any day, really).

Let’s start with what’s happening inside the roll: a combination of tempura battered shrimp and kani (crab). After getting tightly rolled up in a sleeping bag of rice, it is topped with a mixture of spicy tuna, their homemade dressing and unagi. Once that’s in place a sprinkling of crispies is added along with an additional layer of unagi sauce before a quick torch for added texture and smokiness.

In addition to the crispies on top, the tempura shrimp give you plenty of texture to go around. The sauces seep ever so gently into each bite and not only provide a subtle sweetness, but a depth of richness to go along with a creamy umami punch.

I don’t know how many rolls you’re custom to put away, but you might want to go with two orders just to be safe – or go with their all-you-can-eat option. There’s also no shortage of sake or craft cocktail offerings to go along with it. In any case, it’s tough to take your time with this roll – it just goes down way too easy.

Sushi Pier is located at 177 US Hwy 50 in Stateline. For menu and more information, visit them online at tahoesushipier.com or reach them by phone at 775-588-8588.
