EAT This Week: Tahoe Tavern & Grill’s Mushroom Street Tacos
To try and decide each week where and what to eat around the basin can be a challenge – there are so many amazing choices. In this feature we’ll dive into dishes that will surely satisfy those hunger pangs and leave you wondering where to go next.
Street, Tacos. Those two words alone are enough to perk up my ears and listen to whatever is coming next. I would say there are specific things I am waiting to hear to get super excited but in reality, all you need to say is street tacos and I’m already foaming at the mouth. This week’s feature is a good example.

While Tahoe Tavern gives you protein options of chicken, carne asada, carnitas, tri-tip, creole spiced shrimp, or mushrooms, it’s the latter that might be the most interesting and unique. They do an amazing job standing in for the protein in these tacos and they really are the stars of the show. They are joined in the double crispy fried corn shell approach by diced onion, cilantro, and cotija cheese and served with their scratch made salsas.
It’s a savory and rich option, but the salt from the cotija and herb-y tang from the cilantro balance out the flavors nicely. And since they give you both salsa options, doubling up is not a crime. Add in some freshly made guac and this gonzo approach to the street taco hits the high notes like Robert Plant in his prime.
Some of the best things come in threes: Musketeers, little pigs, stooges, and of course, these tacos. If you’re thinking about ordering these to share, you may want to reconsider. But if you’re willing to push your luck and go with the sharing option without tasting first, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
