Echo Summit could open Saturday

Staff reports

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.- Highway 50 could reopen as early as Saturday, five days before the closure was expected to end, Caltrans announced Friday.

The exact timing of the opening depends on weather and if crews finish paving Friday, Caltrans spokeswoman Deanna Shoopman said. The timing of the opening will be announced Saturday, she added.

“Caltrans and the contractor, C.C. Myers Inc. are anticipating the highway will be opened as soon as Saturday afternoon,” according to a Caltrans media advisory released Friday.

Currently, workers are re-paving the stretch of road that was excavated to pour cement slabs that will support the new rock wall, Shoopman said. The opening is highly dependent on weather and temperature fluctuations between now and project completion, according to the media advisory.

“Anything could happen,” Shoopman said.
