EDITORIAL: Harry Reid campaign ad crosses ethical line
June 16, 2010
A recent television commercial by the Harry Reid campaign criticizes his opponent, Sharron Angle, by using the Tahoe Daily Tribune as a news reference. Usually this is the status-quo for campaigns, but in this case, the Reid campaign crossed the ethical line of fair use by wrongly portraying the newspaper and the article itself.
The commercial depicts the Tahoe Daily Tribune as having published a story about Sharron Angle’s approach to Social Security on the front page, as the main story. This is not true. In fact, we only published it online and never in print. By redesigning the Tribune to show this story, the Reid campaign strongly misleads viewers on the importance of this issue, and how the Tribune played it.
The Tahoe Daily Tribune was never consulted on this issue, and strongly disagrees with the actions of the Reid campaign, and has asked them to remove the Tribune from the commercial.
Editor’s Note: This editorial in no way endorses Sharron Angle or Harry Reid.
