EDITORIAL: More unknowns bad for region

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The efforts to slug through bankruptcy court to develop a would-be convention center and condominium complex near Stateline will be worthwhile only if the developer repairs its relationship with the community.

But is restoring trust even a possibility? That is the main question we encourage the judge and creditors to ask before deciding who should control the direction of what locals call, “The Hole.”

The development company eroded community trust, which was shaky to begin with, when it failed to produce the financing it promised. The future is now foggy at best, which leaves our community where we started – unsure, unaware and untrusting.

The best case scenario? Solid financing is discovered, and a developer continues with the already approved plans with a tremendous amount of public and private oversight. And, an apology to the community- sooner than later – would get the necessary healing started.

Most importantly, we want all parties – including the judge – to know that this project is more important than just filling in, “The Hole.” In a volatile economy that needs consistency to build confidence, we cannot start the recovery until this important project is back on track, or at least, back to the drawing board.

For now, it’s somewhere in between, which is the worst place to be – the unknown.
