Educational Foundation honors retirees

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will host the 16th annual Celebration of Education from 6 to 9 p.m. May 29 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe special events center. The public is invited to attend and honor retiring personnel from the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. The foundation is a community-based nonprofit organization with the mission of raising and distributing funds for the benefit of Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with no-host cocktails and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $30 per person and reservations may be made by contacting Del Laine at (530) 544-6249, fax (530) 544-8889, or e-mail lainetahoe@aolcom. Reservations must be made by May 20 and tables may be arranged at no additional cost.

Retiring personnel who will be honored are:

— Linda Blaney has 31 years with Lake Tahoe Unified School District. She was a substitute teacher in 1973-74 and has taught English, honors and advancement placement English and English literature/composition at South Tahoe High School since 1974. She also was the English department chair.

— Cheryl Du Fay has 11 years with the district. She taught Special Day Class, Learning Handicapped at Bijou Community School from 1994 through 1998, was a resource specialist with South Tahoe Middle School from 1998-2000 and taught Special Day Class, Learning Handicapped at STMS from 2000 to the present.

— Sharon Higman has been with the district for 28 years. She taught in a grades three/four combination class for one year and a first-grade class for two years from 1976 through 1979 at Al Tahoe Elementary School; and taught kindergarten from 1979-81 and 1982-93, first grade 1993-2000 and kindergarten 2000 to present at Bijou Community School.

— Jack Lopez has 29 years with the district. He taught state requirements and driver’s training, physical education and intramural sports and geography from 1976 to the present. He was also a department chairman.

— Susan Louis has a total of 32 years with LTUSD. She was a substitute teacher 1972-73, Child Care Center group teacher 1973-74, taught fifth and sixth grades from 1974-83 at Sierra House Elementary, fourth, four/five combination and fifth-grade classes 1983-89 at Tahoe Valley Elementary, fifth grade 1989-2004 at Meyers Elementary School, and fifth grade 2004 to the present at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

— Lynn Shaw has been with the district for 38 years. She taught first grade and kindergarten from 1966-74 at Al Tahoe Elementary School and kindergarten, kindergarten/first-grade combination and first grade from 1974 to the present at Sierra House Elementary School.

— Laura Stamme has worked for the district for 20 years. She taught English, English as a second language, literature, reading/writing/oral language, creative writing and western history from 1983-1994 at South Tahoe High School, taught English, English as a second language, practical reading and writer at the Transitional Learning Center from 1994-98, and sheltered and English language development from 1998 to the present.

— Teresita “Tere” Tibbetts has been with the district for 19 years. She taught English as a second language and all subjects to limited English speakers from 1986-92 at South Tahoe High School, and taught English as a second language, Spanish language, and all subjects to limited English speakers from 1992 to the present at the Transitional Learning Center.

— Karin Wright has been with LTUSD for 37 years. She taught French, science, American studies, core and literature from 1968-79 at South Tahoe Middle School, and French, civics, US and western history from 1979 to the present at South Tahoe High School.

— David Miller has been with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District for 48 years. He taught sixth, eighth and seventh grades from 1956-1964 at South Tahoe Elementary School, seventh and eighth grades 1964-66 at South Tahoe Intermediate School, was vice principal of South Tahoe Intermediate School 1967-69, taught seventh and eighth grade math, algebra, core and body building and worked periodically as assistant principal and counselor from 1969-1988 at South Tahoe Intermediate, and taught seventh-grade general math and eighth-grade basic algebra from 1969 to the present at South Tahoe Middle School.

— Ricardo Espiritu was originally hired as a custodian at South Tahoe High School July 6, 1982. Due to budget cuts, he was laid off in September 1982. He was rehired April 9, 1984, and has worked graveyard, swing and day shifts with the district for 21 years.

— Alan Petrell has worked for Lake Tahoe Unified School District for 22 years. He was hired as a heavy equipment mechanic Feb. 4, 1983, and in May 2002 was promoted to vehicle maintenance supervisor.

— Randy Stamme started working for LTUSD as a substitute custodian in January 1984 and has 20 years with the district. In May 1984 he was reassigned to paint schools and was granted permanent status as a custodian May 21, 1984. In May 1985 he was promoted to craftsworker/painter. In addition to his duties as craftsworker/painter, he was the head coach for the eight-grade boys basketball team from 1998-2000, assistant coach for freshman boys basketball 2001-02, and assistant coach for junior varsity boys basketball from 2002-2004.
