El Dorado County fair starts today

Cotton candy, Ferris wheels, blue-ribbon cakes and 4-H members gathering in barns can mean only one thing – it’s fair time. The 2007 “Squeals and Wheels” El Dorado County Fair will kick off today with a noon ribbon-cutting, and run through Sunday at the fairgrounds, 100 Placerville Drive in Placerville.

“The gathering of products and services, buyers and sellers in one place is exactly why fairs were established, and is what drives the fair today,” said Jody Gray, CEO of the El Dorado County Fairgrounds.

County fairs evolved from a need to bring together numerous vendors and buyers from areas far and wide. Located along major trade or pilgrimage routes, fairs and festivals provided opportunities for people to demonstrate their skills and crafts, exchange ideas, and barter for goods.

The El Dorado County Fair will feature exhibits, competitions, entertainment, carnival rides, food, auctions, dances, demonstrations, a motorcycle parade, wheelbarrow races and a destruction derby – you name it and you can find it at the fair.

The entry fee is $8 regular, $5 for ages 7 to 12, free for children 6 and under, and $5 for seniors 60 and older. Parking is $5 and free shuttle service is available. Credit cards will be accepted at the entrance.
