El Dorado grand jury to hold open house

Those who would like to learn more about the El Dorado County Grand Jury, or who may be interested in becoming a member, are invited to an informational open house from 5 to 7 p.m. March 5.

The event will be held in the ground-floor atrium of County Building B, 360 Fair Lane Drive, Placerville.

Grand jury foreperson Rosemary Mulligan will introduce the 18-member grand jury and explain the selection process, role of the grand jurors, commitment and obligations, and orientation and training provided.

Judge James Wagoner, the supervising judge of the grand jury, is expected to attend. A tour of the grand jury chambers will follow the briefing.

The county grand jury is an investigative body of 19 citizens who are charged and sworn to investigate county matters of civil concern.

As an independent arm of the court, the grand jury represents the public’s interests including, but not limited to, concerns regarding such areas as county government, city government, special districts, local school districts, annual inspection of the adult jail and juvenile facilities and inspection of county buildings.

Members serve one-year terms.

May 4 is the deadline for submitting applications to serve on the next grand jury. Applications are available online at http://www.co.el-dorado.ca.us/grandjury.
