Elderly couple killed in West Shore crash

Sierra Sun and Tahoe Daily Tribune

An elderly couple was killed Friday morning in an accident on Highway 89 along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.

An 83-year-old male driver and an 81-year-old woman passenger died when their Volkswagen Vanagon crossed the double-yellow line on Highway 89 heading south near Sugarpine State Park at about 11:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Their van struck an oncoming Ford F450 pickup, said CHP Officer Jeff Gartner.

The 45-year-old Carson City man driving the truck was uninjured, Gartner said.

“It doesn’t appear that alcohol was a factor; it appears they were maybe going too quick for the road conditions, the snow and slush,” Gartner said.

The names of the couple from San Mateo, Calif., had not been released as of Friday pending notification of family, Gartner said.
