Emergency repairs to reduce rockfall near Cave Rock

Tribune staff report

On Wednesday the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will contract emergency safety repairs to remove hillside rocks from an area of recent rockfall on Highway 50 near Cave Rock.

Work will take place from approximately 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. During that time, westbound travel lanes through the tunnel will be closed. Both directions of traffic will be alternated through the eastbound tunnel, with as much as 30-minute travel delays to be expected.

During the weekend rains rocks from the roadside slope fell onto the road, temporarily closing highway lanes near the Cave Rock tunnel on Saturday evening. NDOT maintenance crews removed the boulders from the roadway, some as large as 6-feet-wide.

The approximately $7,000 in emergency repairs will remove potentially loose rocks from the roadside slope near the westbound Cave Rock tunnel entrance.

The emergency repairs will be made by Hi-Tech Rockfall, considered an industry leader in rockfall reduction and slope stabilization.

“Making sure that drivers can safely get where they need to go is our top priority, and this work will help ensure safety by reducing the potential of future storm-related rockfall,” NDOT District Engineer Thor Dyson explained.
