Environmental summit slated at Echo

Staff Reports

Environmental groups from all over the Sierra Nevada will converge next month at Echo Lake Berkeley Camp to talk about environmental issues facing California’s defining mountain range.

“We’ll be talking about growth in the foothills, economic revival in a former mill town, the challenges of changes in ownership of (Pacific Gas & Electric) facilities throughout the Sierra and the processes driving all these changes,” said Laurel Ames, executive director of the Sierra Nevada Alliance.

Called “Shaping the Sierra: Strategies to Weave Together our Land and Our Culture,” it will be the sixth annual conference. There will be panels, discussions and presentations throughout the weekend focusing on a variety of topics: an economic and cultural study of central Sierra ranches, the relationships between environmental groups and the media and more.

The Sierra Nevada Alliance is a regional coalition of nonprofit grassroots groups working to protect and restore natural resources and community values of the Sierra Nevada. The annual conference is a vehicle for the Alliance to reach out to individuals and organizations.
