Escapee returns to El Dorado jail after break

El Dorado County Jail inmate Tim Tickner turned himself in on Sunday,18 hours after he escaped.

Tickner was an inmate worker at the Placerville facility. He was serving a sentence for a probation violation. Worker inmates are not held in lockdown and are allowed more freedoms than regular inmates.

“Trustees are allowed to do certain jobs inside and outside of the complex,” said El Dorado Sheriff’s Sgt. Don Atkinson. “It actually wasn’t a jailbreak. He just walked off the job.”

After his escape at about 10 a.m., Tickner made his way to a nearby car dealership and stole a vehicle.

“He walked to Harold Ford Motors and stole a pickup and drove to his wife’s house in Sacramento,” said Sheriff’s Capt. Bob Altmeyer.

The El Dorado Sheriff’s Department received a call from Sacramento Police, who notified them their fugitive was being sought for a domestic dispute in the Sacramento area. The El Dorado Sheriff’s Patrol Division was mobilized to find Tickner’s whereabouts.

“Our Patrol Division did a lot of the leg work to contact all the people (Tickner) might be contacting, and that is how we were able to contact him,” Altmeyer said.

While Sheriff’s deputies did not find Tickner directly, they were able to contact him over a cell phone, and convince him to turn himself in.

“We were able to make contact with him and he turned himself in about 4 a.m. (Sunday),” Altmeyer said.
