Event honors deceased children

Provided to the Tribune

Provided to the Tahoe Daily Tribune. One Voice choir members from Unity at the Lake who will sing at the Sunday gathering at the Children's Memorial Log are, from left, standing, Linda Bertinelli, Rick Botto, Kim Carr, Michelle Botto, Jesse Kruse, David Case and Dory Smith. Group leader Nina Hoffman is at the piano.

Compassionate Friends, a support group for families who have lost a child of any age, will sponsor a gathering to honor children who have passed away at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Children’s Memorial Log on Lake Tahoe Boulevard east of Wildwood Avenue. There are plaques on the log with names, birth and passing dates of many children.

There will be music provided by One Voice, a choir with guitar, piano and drums from Unity at the Lake. Nina Hoffman, leader, will play additional music on her keyboard. JJ Entertainment will provide a speaker system with microphone and generator as well as some music. The names of children who have passed away will be read. Anyone interested in having their child’s name read and/or would like to say a few words about their child may call Arline at (775) 588-6997. However, spontaneous sharing is also encouraged. There will be an opportunity to recite a poem, tell a story, share something of interest about one’s child, or even display large photographs or items made by that child. This will be a time of sharing and to give comfort to one another. Anyone is welcome to attend. It is suggested that each person bring water and a folding or lounge chair to sit on in the grass.

At the end of the service, there will be a balloon lift-off. Families may write the name of their child and a message to send on a balloon, before the balloons are released heaven-ward.

Compassionate Friends usually meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the second Thursday of the month. Times may change with input from those attending. Meetings take place in the lounge of the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The next meeting is Sept. 8. Rebecca Phillipsen, social worker with Barton Hospice, who has worked with families to cope with grief at the loss of their loved ones, is the professional adviser to the group.

Everyone is welcome to attend the gathering at the memorial log or the regular meetings. For more information call Arline at (775) 588-6997 or Jonquil at (530) 544-6892.
