Yes, you are at Lake Tahoe surrounded by nature’s bounty, and the great outdoors is putting a lot of pressure on you to be sportif. You’ve done the kayaking, the paddleboarding, the yoga, the yoga paddleboarding, some water skiing (OK, you drove the boat), but your inner spectator has been neglected. The last time you had any serious face time with ESPN was during the World Cup and, even that was cut short when your wife caught you freeze framing on J-Lo while the kids were in the room (Ms. Lopez really is very athletic). What are you waiting for? You don’t have to be in the flatlands, sitting in your sagging man chair to enjoy a day of sports via satellite and exercising vicariously.

On the Rocks Bar & Grill takes the guilt out of this guilty pleasure while you’re on holiday. It really combines the best of both recreational worlds: Sports and vacation. Actually make that three worlds: Sports, vacation and food. Now we are talking about a holiday.

The interior of this cafe/sports bar is trendy, yet casual, and also kid friendly, with plenty of room for the youngsters to move around and play the jukebox or try their hand at the a full-size pool table. For your viewing pleasure there are eight flat screens devoted to whatever is big and happening now in the world of sports. The menu here runs from upgraded game-day fare such as the South Philly sandwich, garlic fries, Cajun chicken, roasted pork tacos and pizza (made with organic ingredients) to beautiful salads (the cobb brought tears to my eyes) and more foodie-type selections such as the eggplant Caprese salad and the Peruvian ceviche – white fish cooked in citrus-cilantro juice with red onions, served on a bed of fresh avocado wedges and surrounded by homemade tortilla chips.

The prices here are surprisingly reasonable given their zip code. For instance, the Buffalo chicken salad made with grilled chicken (as opposed to fried) and with the flavorful addition of bell peppers and shredded carrots will only set you back $10. I can’t go into 7-Eleven without spending $15. On the Rocks has a full bar with a very decent wine list (It’s not very sports bar like. They are in a class of their own.) and a great selection of draft beers. The coffee was also good enough to get my hand shaking, so please excuse the fuzzy photo. This time of year there is outdoor seating, so get there early and stake your claim. Of course, one of the cool things about On the Rocks is it is off the beaten path (Hmm… good ad or T-shirt material…“On the Rocks and off the beaten path”) and, thus, not always swamped – yet.
