Failed drug test forces UNLV forward Shaw off team

The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS – UNLV says Matt Shaw is off the Runnin’ Rebels men’s basketball team after failing a post-game drug test in the team’s NCAA tournament loss.

In an athletic department statement released Tuesday, the 6-foot-8 junior forward admitted failing a random drug test after the Rebels’ first-round loss March 18 to Northern Iowa in Oklahoma City.

A resulting one-year suspension makes Shaw ineligible for what would have been his senior year.

The 22-year-old Shaw played three seasons at UNLV after arriving for the 2006-07 season from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. He missed the 2008-09 season after knee surgery.

He started 11 games last season, averaging 7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

UNLV said Shaw still plans to complete his undergraduate degree this summer.
