On top of everything else, from evacuation to inspecting its damaged home and living in another house, the Matheny family had to deal with another tragedy.

On July 6, when they were packing up some belongings from their fire-licked home on Mt. Shasta Circle, Bear, the family’s 4-year-old Rottweiler mix, escaped through the back door and was fatally struck by a blue full-size truck.

“It just kept on going,” said Teddi Matheny about the truck.

According to Teddi, Bear was still alive, but soon died. Staff at Alpine Animal Hospital could not save him.

Bear was on the side of the road barking at the vehicle when he went under the back tires of the unidentified truck, according to Matheny.

Lt. Robert Gerat of El Dorado County Animal control said the truck even stopped at a stop sign before disappearing.

Gerat said the driver could be charged with hit and run of property.

“I can’t say any of the animal cruelty statutes would apply in this case,” he said.

Matheny just wants the unknown driver to show some responsibility.

Anyone with information on this event is asked to contact Gerat at (530) 577-1766.
