Family found dead by gunshot believed to be murder/suicide

Tahoe Daily Tribune Staff

Investigators believe an elderly El Dorado Hills man killed both his wife and his son before turning the gun on himself.

The bodies of Richard Kalsbeek, his wife Marjorie Jane, 74, and their son, Freddy, 41, were discovered in the Kalsbeek’s home on the 700 block of El Nido Circle around 7:45 p.m. Saturday.

El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the house after a neighbor requested a check on the Kalsbeek family. The neighbor hadn’t seen the family and couldn’t reach them by telephone.

Deputies also found two dead dogs and cat inside the house.

At first, investigators said they were treating all the deaths as possible homicides. On Sunday morning investigators said evidence suggested the Kalsbeek died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was the primary suspect in the death of his wife and son. Autopsies are scheduled this week.
