Family lost overnight

El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department searched Saturday night for a man and his two children who were hiking near Bonnet Road south of Mormon Emigrant Trail after they didn’t return to a designated pick-up location on time.

A deputy reported that Kirby Smith, 42, Jeremy, 15, and Kelly, 5, planned to meet the children’s mother at Bonnetti Road at 6 p.m. after they had done some fishing, but during the hike they got stuck in a deep river canyon.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the Smiths at Camp Creek Sunday at 9 a.m., three miles from where their hike started.

El Dorado County Search and Rescue helped the group, all of whom were uninjured, out of the canyon.

Deputies searching for the family members found bear tracks on top of the Smiths’ footprints.
