Fatal auto accident at Stateline

Gregory Crofton

A Stateline woman was killed in a three-car accident Wednesday evening after a man motored through a red traffic light at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Kingsbury Grade.

Mariah Davenport, 27, was driving westbound in a 1998 black two-door Mitsubishi in the left lane of Highway 50 around 5:30 p.m. Coming down Kingsbury Grade was Bernard Schnipper, 72, of Glendale, Calif., in a 1998 gold four-door Ford.

Schnipper, with his wife Barbara, 66, who was the passenger seat, blew the light and collided with the driver’s door of Davenport’s Mitsubishi, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The impact of the accident sent the Mitsubishi off the road and through a black chain-link fence that enclosed part of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club.

Davenport was conscious and able to speak when paramedics got to the scene. A Care Flight helicopter landed on the golf course but Davenport died of cardiac arrest before it took flight, said Tahoe-Douglas Fire Chief Tim Smith.

Schnipper’s car also collided with a 1999 white Isuzu driven by Darryl Tweten, 53, of Reno, who was headed westbound in the right lane. The right front of the Isuzu hit the passenger-side door of the Ford.

Tweten was uninjured in the wreck. Paramedics transported the Schnippers to Barton Memorial Hospital. On Thursday, Barbara was listed in stable condition. Bernard was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday night.

The accident created westbound traffic on Highway 50 and Kingsbury Grade for four hours. NHP Trooper Patrick McGill said no one received a ticket because of the wreck but it is under investigation.
