Fatal car accident near Meeks Bay

Gregory Crofton

A San Diego woman was killed Wednesday on State Route 89 at Silvertip Drive, which is south of Meeks Bay, after she slumped over at the wheel, crossed into the southbound lane and hit a car head-on.

Liliana Morton, 75, was pronounced dead at Barton Memorial Hospital. Around 11:45 a.m. her blue 1995 Ford Escort rammed a gray 2000 Lexus sports utility vehicle injuring its driver and passenger.

“Witnesses said she fell asleep or slumped down and went over the wheel,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Earl Boyd. “It’s still under investigation.”

The driver of the Lexus, Judith Farkas, 33, of San Francisco, complained of pain to her neck and shoulders. Her passenger, Lisa Konjicek, 32, also of San Francisco, broke her foot. Both were transported to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee.

Konjicek and Farkas wore seat belts during the accident. CHP said it could not determine if Morton was wearing her seat belt.

Traffic was reduced to one lane until the totaled cars were towed away.
