Fernley survives Warrior rally

The third quarter is quickly becoming the Whittell Warriors’ time to excel.

Whittell battled back from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter Thursday to challenge Fernley in the opening round of the Dayton tournament. The Vaqueros, however, stemmed the comeback and went on to win 54-45.

“We changed up our defenses in the third quarter and got a few turnovers and missed shots,” said Whittell coach Tyler Rose, whose team did the same thing on Tuesday at Smith Valley.

The Warriors (0-3) got as close as three points before Fernley started converting drives to the basket and burying some timely three-pointers.

Senior Cody Nelson, playing in his first game of the season, led Whittell with 13 points, while junior Alex Potnick added 10.

The Warriors will play at 4:30 p.m. today in Dayton.
