Fight leads to charge of attempted murder

William Ferchland, Tahoe Daily Tribune

An Olympic Valley man was arrested on attempted murder charges after he allegedly used his car to drag a man through a parking lot.

Placer County sheriff’s deputies said Matthew David Haff, 28, and Thomas Hans Berenbak Jr., 31, of Tahoe City got into a confrontation in the Squaw Valley ski resort parking lot on Saturday.

Berenbak later approached Haff while he was in his vehicle. Deputies said witnesses told them that Haff struck Berenbak with his vehicle and dragged him about one-quarter mile across the parking lot before he became dislodged from the vehicle near the post office.

Berenbak was taken to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee before being airlifted to Washoe Medical Center. He sustained abdominal injuries, fractured ribs and a broken leg, according to deputies.
