Fighting violence against women
Last year more than 1,100 communities hosted V-Day benefits around the world, raising funds and awareness of violence against women. From Oklahoma City to London to Cairo, V-Day benefits celebrated the work of local “Vagina Warriors,” women and men working toward ending violence against women at the community level. These highly successful events raised more than $4 million through performances of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, “The Vagina Monologues.”
Hot on the heels of their success, V-Day South Lake Tahoe has joined the global effort to stop violence against women and girls. In association with the V-Day 2006 Worldwide Campaign, Pantyline Productions will present V-Day South Lake Tahoe 2006, a benefit production of “The Vagina Monologues.”
V-Day South Lake Tahoe will present a one-night-only benefit production at 5:30 p.m. Saturday on the Tahoe Queen at Ski Run Marina. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased at the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center, 2941 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Immediately following the performance, complimentary hors d’oeuvres and music by Tony B. and Friends will be available on the Tahoe Queen.
Additionally, in an effort to bring the benefit production of “The Vagina Monologues” to the community, V-Day South Lake Tahoe will conduct a public dress rehearsal of the play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Divided Sky in Meyers. Tickets will not be sold, but donations will be accepted.
V-Day’s 2006 theme is Vagina Warriors – The New ReVolution, celebrating new activists and leaders who are working to end violence against women in their communities. Vagina Warriors are the women and men who have often experienced violence personally or witnessed it within their communities and dedicated themselves toward ending such violence through effective, grassroots means. V-Day South Lake Tahoe will honor a local Vagina Warrior and highlight the work she is doing in the community.
Hailed by The New York Times as “funny” and “poignant” and by the Daily News as “intelligent” and “courageous” “The Vagina Monologues,” which was first performed off-Broadway, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences.
