Final H1N1 vaccine clinic set for Wednesday

Barton Health is hosting its last free H1N1 flu shot clinic 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at South Tahoe Middle School, 2940 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The event is open to individuals age 6 months and older, and is suitable for children under 9 who need a second dose of the vaccine. The event is in partnership with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District and El Dorado Public Health.

Local health officials say this is the last scheduled clinic and encourage those age 24 and younger to get vaccinated. The H1N1 virus is most dangerous to children, teens, pregnant women and those who have chronic health conditions.

“We are not seeing the high risk population in our vaccination clinics,” said Dr. Darcie Carpenter, Barton’s director of Infection Control. “The older folks are taking advantage of the vaccine, but the true high risk group for H1N1 illness is the younger population.

“Barton has had 12 hospitalizations over the last six months due to the H1N1 illness,” Carpenter added, “and out of those 12 cases, two-thirds were under the age of 30, one as young as 15 months, and all were under the age of 57.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the H1N1 cases peaked nationally in November and they anticipate another rise in cases this spring.
