Fire caused by Christmas tree rips through mobile home

A Christmas tree fell on a candle creating a fire that ripped through a mobile home Sunday night.

The blaze caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the Julie Lane residence. South Lake Tahoe Fire Department sent two engines to the scene and had the fire under control by 6 p.m.

“I tripped trying to take the lights off and the tree landed on the bar where there was a candle,” said Kim Jackson, a 34-year-old living in the mobile home. “I tried to put the fire out with a place mat. Then ran outside across the street and they (neighbors) called 911.”

Firefighters were in salvage mode by 6:15 p.m., a process that requires ripping apart a structure to make sure all fire is extinguished.

“It doesn’t take much for them to be completely destroyed,” said South Lake Tahoe Fire engineer Dennis Kankel. “It’s all paneling and glue.

“Another three or four minutes and it could have endangered the house next to it and everything else.”

Tahoe Verde park manager Marlene Boudreau said the response time of the fire department was excellent. “Awesome response,” she said. “At least no one was hurt. They had volunteers here in minutes and that really makes a difference.”

The salvaging process, however, was not entirely successful. Smoldering couches left outside outside the home rekindled at 10:15 p.m. and firefighters had to return and again douse the furniture with water.
