Fire chars Kahle Drive apartment building

A man stood in the parking lot in pajamas and sandals waiting to get back in his home. It would be a long time before that happened.

Thursday around noon a fire forced several residents from the Nevada Royale Apartments at 100 block of Kahle Drive. The blaze started in the wall of a vacant apartment and spread to an adjacent unit, both of which were destroyed.

“We’re pleased it was confined to the two units, it could have been the whole building if we hadn’t had good response,” said Tahoe-Doulgas Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Bruce Van Cleemput. “The fire started in the wall, we don’t know exactly the cause. It burned up a bathroom wall … and spread between the two units.

The fire caused more than $100,000 in damage to the complex because a hole had to be cut in the roof and eight apartments had smoke damage, Van Cleemput said. All of the units in the building are to remain closed until a full investigation is completed.

The initial report of fire came in at 12:11 p.m. and Tahoe-Douglas Fire Protection District was at the scene by 12:16 p.m. Van Cleemput said. Including trucks from South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, six engines were at the complex. The fire was completely contained by 1:20 p.m.

“That building is shut down,” he said. “The manager is going to make sure those people who are displaced have a place to stay. The manager’s been excellent. “
