Fire destroys vacation home

A home on Grass Lake Way is fully involved when firefighters arrived on scene Tuesday morning. The photo was taken by Lake Valley Fire Chief Jeff Michael.

Nearly 7,000 gallons of water were used to douse a flame-engulfed house along Grass Lake Way off Highway 89 in Christmas Valley, firefighters said.

No one was in the house or injured by the Tuesday fire, said Bob Rossi, a battalion chief with Lake Valley Fire Protection District. The house was occupied Sunday by weekend visitors, he added.

“When Lake Valley (personnel) arrived, it was fully involved with snow covering the road, so we knew no one was in the fire,” said Chief Jeff Michael.

The first report of the fire came at 8:22 a.m. It took 30 minutes to control the fire with 20 firefighters from Lake Valley and an engine from the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department. It took another hour to distinguish the flames, Rossi said.

The estimated damage to the chalet-style house is between $300,000 to $500,000, Michael said.

The source of the fire is still under investigation.
