South Tahoe Public Utilities District (STPUD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department crews responded to a burst fire hydrant pipe late Tuesday night on Tucker Avenue near the “Y” intersection of highways 50 and 89.

STPUD crews worked until almost 6 a.m. on Wednesday to clean up the flooded street between Glorene Avenue and Highway 89, including removing the mud from in front of Alexys Soto’s business, South Shore Custom Design.

Soto said Wednesday morning that when he arrived at his shop shortly after 10 p.m., the area was flooded and fire crews were working to resolve the situation.

“It was like a lake,” Soto said.

Soto said the flood caused him to open late. While there was no apparent damage to his shop, a next door business sustained water damage to its carpet.

Chris Stanley, STPUD underground repair supervisor, said the cause of the damaged pipe was still unknown.

“The pipe just burst apart,” Stanley said. He added it was a newer pipe that had been installed in the last eight years.

Stanley said there was no water damage to the road.

“Since it burst in the dirt, it was mostly just mud we had to clean up,” Stanley said.
