Fireplace safety tips:

n Clean your chimney every year – regardless of whether you burn wood or pressed logs.

n Keep furniture and rugs a safe distance from the fireplace.

n Use a fireplace screen.

n Keep children away from the fireplace.

n Stay in the room with a burning fireplace and keep an extinguisher nearby.

n Do not toss papers or other burnable items into the fire unless you monitor the burning to ashes.

n If you get too close and clothing catches fire, stop, drop and roll over to smother the flames. Cover your face with your hands.

n Keep anything that might burn away from the fireplace.

n Do not burn pine cones. The sap in the pinecones, when burned, creates a flammable glaze inside the chimney.
