First California governor’s race debate scheduled

The Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – The California Broadcasters Association and the Public Policy Institute of California have announced the first gubernatorial debate of the general election.

The groups said Thursday they will co-sponsor a 90-minute broadcast on Oct. 5. All certified candidates for governor will be invited if they get at least 10 percent support among likely California voters in a major poll before Sept. 15.

Attorney General Jerry Brown, the Democratic nominee, and Republican nominee Meg Whitman are the leading candidates for governor.

The October debate will be divided into five topics, each led by moderators who are specialists in those subject areas.
