Free gondola rides for locals

Spring break takes on a whole new meaning this weekend, with Heavenly Ski Resort giving free gondola rides to locals Friday and Sierra-at-Tahoe offering a discount on its last day of operation Sunday.

Locals Appreciation Day at Heavenly offers a 15-minute scenic ride 2.4 miles up the South Shore mountain.

Leave your skis and boards at home though. This is a sightseeing tour only.

The gondola stops at the observation deck on the ridge, which allows for the opportunity to step out of the gondola car to take in sweeping views of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Tickets can be picked up at the base of the gondola from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Two forms of identification will be required, one with a photograph.

What constitutes a local?

It’s those who live in South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Paradise, Meyers and Meeks Bay in California and Stateline, Zephyr Cove, Cave Rock and Gardnerville in Nevada.

Sierra-at-Tahoe ticket prices will cost $15 Sunday.

Heavenly expects to end its season in May.
