Free yoga class for South Shore seniors

A free yoga/stretch class will be offered to seniors and other people at 11 a.m. Dec. 16 at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

“Yoga can help a person experience peace, harmony and relaxation. It also can help reduce stress, pain and stiffness and enable one to have more energy and flexibility and, thus, be able to enjoy life more fully,” said Mel Laub, leader of the class. “In addition to stretching and deep breathing, as in traditional yoga, participants will be taught other movements intended to have a positive affect on all parts of the body.”

Laub is a 67-year-old man who looks and acts a great deal younger, has been physically active and is always looking for way to improve health and a sense of well-being. He would like to share some of what he knows with other seniors. Many people may not have tried yoga in the past for fear it would be too difficult. Laub said that what he plans to show participants will be easy to do; that people who attend should not compare themselves with others, but each person should go at his or her own pace and do what is comfortable for them. What is most important is the slow, deep breathing. Position of the body is secondary.

It is recommended that participants wear loose clothing and drink water. It is preferable that they don’t eat any food just before the session.
