Freelance ski instructors get schooled in business law

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies cited four people on Dec. 4 for allegedly offering ski lessons without the proper business licenses, said Lt. Les Lovell in a statement this week.

Deputies issued the citations during multiple sting operations at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The stings targeted people advertising their services as ski and snowboard instructors, Lovell said.

All four individuals were charged with misdemeanor crimes and released on promise to appear citations.

When ski or snowboard lessons are offered for profit, a business license is necessary, Lovell said. Ski areas that use special use permits also require independent concessionaires to obtain permission from the permit holder before operating, Lovell said.

None of the cited individuals had business licenses from El Dorado County or permission from Heavenly to operate a business on their leased property. Lovell said.

Of the four people who were arrested as a result of the operation, two were local, one was from Carson City, and the fourth was from Albany, Calif., Lovell said.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office will continue to monitor the Internet and other media sources to insure vendors are operating within the law, Lovell said.
