Friday Night Lights II on Oct. 8

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

Friday Night Lights was such a hit that South Tahoe High has decided to offer a second football game under the lights.

The Vikings’ Northern 3A League game against Sparks has been moved from Saturday, Oct. 9 to Friday, Oct. 8 at Viking Bowl. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Portable lights will once again be rented to illuminate Viking Bowl.

South Tahoe played its first night home game Sept. 10 against Lowry, a game that attracted more than 1,000 spectators, according to the school’s athletic director Don Borges.

“We are excited. We are calling this event Friday Night Lights II,” Borges said.

The Vikings presented the first night game in school history to gauge the interest fans might have in installing permanent lights at Viking Bowl.

“We are looking forward to seeing football on Friday night at home,” Borges said.

South Tahoe football coach Kevin Hennessee said that James Tarwater, Lake Tahoe Unified School District superintendent, has been instrumental in arranging the second night game.

“He saw the community come out for that game,” Hennessee said. “We’re trying to get to the point next year where we’re going to lights.”

Borges estimates it will cost $300,000 for permanent lights, materials and labor. Donations and fundraising volunteers can reach Borges at (530) 541-4111, ext. 226.
