LOS ANGELES – Mitch Mustain completed 14-of-16 passes for 154 yards with a touchdown and freshman Matt Barkley threw a touchdown and ran for another in Southern California’s first intrasquad scrimmage Friday.
Mustain hit his first eight passes including a 28-yard scoring strike to freshman wide receiver De’Von Flournoy.
Barkley, who has been working with the first team while sophomore Aaron Corp is out with a leg injury, was 10-of-17 for 120 yards and an interception. He threw a 19-yard TD to David Ausberry and then scored on an 8-yard draw on the final play of the scrimmage.
“We wanted to see Barkley play a lot. He handled himself beautifully and has made a tremendous impression this first week,” coach Pete Carroll said. “He showed he can handle this. Mustain had a great day, with mostly conservative throws. The defense was really solid, although I was disappointed we didn’t bring more pressure, but the offensive line had a lot to do with that.”
The other scores came on a 2-yard run by redshirt freshman tailback Curtis McNeal, who ran for 59 yards on 7 carries overall, and a 22-yard field goal by Jordan Congdon on the opening drive.
Shane Horton led the defense with five tackles, while South Tahoe High product Nick Garratt, Drew McAllister, Malik Jackson and Robert Erickson had four each. Will Harris had an interception and Everson Griffen had a sack.
