Gebrselassie fails to beat his record in Dubai

The Associated Press

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Haile Gebrselassie has won the Dubai marathon, falling three minutes short of his own world record.

The 36-year-old Ethiopian champion finished the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 9 seconds. He set the world record in the 2008 Berlin marathon at 2:03:59.

Gebrselassie complained of back problems and not sleeping well before Friday’s run along Dubai’s Persian Gulf coast, but in an interview with Dubai Sports TV, he said he was “happy just to win the race.”
