Genoa primed for Candy Dance

The weekend of Sept. 23-24, Genoa will welcome as many as 60,000 visitors to the small historic town for the 80th Candy Dance.

The Candy Dance Faire doubles the existing population of Douglas County in those two days. The annual fund-raising event has a dance and a vendor’s faire.

Some 300 arts and crafts faire vendors will be in Genoa Park, on Nixon and the Mormon Station Park on Genoa Lane and Main Street. Twelve food vendors will be at the Genoa Fire Station on Main Street and other areas throughout the faire.

Roads will be closed in Genoa only. Access to the Candy Dance Faire can be made on Genoa Lane, Jacks Valley Road and Muller/Foothill Boulevard. Free parking is available at all three streets just outside the town of Genoa. Official personnel will direct traffic and help visitors. Shuttles will be running from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the parking areas into town. Through traffic will not be allowed on Candy Dance days; only authorized persons and residents will be allowed access.

Volunteers are needed and welcome to help the town make candy. Call the town office at 782-8696. This huge undertaking provides proceeds to the town for maintenance of roads and street lights and to repair/maintain the two old facilities in town – the Raycraft Hall (1886) and the rebuilt Genoa Community Church (1910).
