Get a taste of ‘Deep Fryed’ Saturday at Divided Sky

Doug Schwartz has got his mojo working at the Divided Sky on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Schwartz, the former frontman for Big Skinny and bassist for the Cash Only Band, has a new group called Deep Fryed Mojo.

The acoustic funk dance band got together during last summer’s open mic night Schwartz headed at the Tudor Pub.

The band played several shows late in the summer at Coloma, where bass player Greg Tomb worked for a whitewater rafting outfit. It also closed out the Moosapaloosa Angora fire relief benefit. Deep Fryed Mojo has played a handful of winter shows at Bub’s at Kirkwood Mountain Resort. Schwartz is the lead guitarist and singer.

“It’s the Doug show, and we try to hang with him and lay down a good foundation,” Tomb said.

Mitch Brown plays keyboard, Darin Sinn is on guitar and mandolin, and Mike Syracuse is the drummer. A typical Deep Fryed Mojo show is 30 to 40 percent originals. The covers range from Yonder Mountain String Band, to the Dead, Dylan, Marshall Tucker Band and the aforementioned Man in Black.

Hip-hop will be the theme at the Sky on Friday, Feb. 22, when the Resonators and Himp C will perform.

On March 1, Deep Fryed Mojo will be part of a smoke-free tripleheader at the Tahoe Underground on Kingsbury Grade. Squealing Pigs, with Scotty Haygood and Joe Rackes from Shamus, will open for headliner Ten Cent Lure featuring former Moby Grape drummer “Fuzzy” John Oxendine.
